Common ask: Timberline HDZ. GAF publishes a StainGuard Plus algae story that, on current sheets, runs longer than the usual Owens Corning StreakGuard window. That is a manufacturer claim. Confirm it on the bag and the PDF for the SKU you are buying.
Golden Pledge (and similar enhanced GAF system coverage) is registered through GAF’s own contractor program, often discussed as Master Elite. GAF sets who qualifies. We do not. If that PDF matters to you at resale, ask the roofer whether they can register it, and keep a copy.
Color range is wide. Pewter Gray, Weathered Wood, and Charcoal are the usual neighborhood-safe asks. They are not a brand endorsement from this site.
Owens Corning, the SureNail pitch
Common ask: Duration. The SureNail strip is a reinforced nailing zone. That is the real product difference, not a thicker “feel” story. Inland and East County Santa Ana exposure is where that detail is worth asking about.
StreakGuard algae coverage is typically a shorter published window than GAF’s current HDZ algae language. If you are in marine-layer streets (Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Encinitas west of I-5), put algae language on the comparison, not a logo winner.
Platinum (and similar Owens Corning enhanced coverage) is tied to Owens Corning’s Preferred Contractor rules. Same rule as GAF: the manufacturer, not Top Pro, decides who can file it.
CertainTeed, the third name on the search
People type “GAF vs CertainTeed vs Owens Corning” because Landmark shows up on architect and custom bids. Landmark, Landmark Pro, and Landmark Premium are thickness and color-tech steps inside one family. Max Def is CertainTeed’s color-blend language.
SureStart Plus is the enhanced CertainTeed path, via their SELECT ShingleMaster program. Same caution: we do not award that status. Fewer San Diego crews carry it than GAF’s high-volume program. That is a availability question, not a quality ranking from this brand.
Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Del Mar, and La Jolla custom work sometimes specs Landmark because the designer already wrote it. That is a document, not proof it outlasts HDZ or Duration on your street.
How to pick without a default “winner”
- Name the product on the bid, not “GAF or equal.”
- Ask which enhanced warranty, if any, that crew can register, and read that PDF.
- Match algae language to marine-layer vs inland UV.
- Match fastening language to Santa Ana exposure (Ramona, Alpine, East County ridges).

If the crew you trust is certified with one maker and not the others, that often settles the brand. The certification is theirs, filed with the manufacturer. It is not a promise we make.
Color: mid-tone grays and weathered woods sell easier than green, blue, or red. Lighter colors reflect more sun. Darker colors hide early algae staining. We will not invent a cooling-bill percent.
Class 4: hail is uncommon here. Some inland carriers still ask about impact rating. Ask your insurer what they will credit. Do not treat a blog as a discount.
