Check your attic ventilation

Bad attic ventilation cooks your shingles from underneath and drives up your cooling bill.

What you'll learn

  • Why a 150°F attic shortens shingle life by years
  • What proper intake and exhaust flow looks like
  • The #1 most common vent problem (soffits blocked by insulation)
  • When moisture staining on sheathing means act now

Step by step

  1. On a warm afternoon, pop the attic hatch. Should feel warm, not blistering.
  2. Look for soffit vents under the eaves — they should be clear, not painted shut.
  3. Look for an exhaust path — ridge vent, gable vents, or powered attic fan.
  4. Check for moisture signs — dark staining, rust on nails, mold.
  5. Check insulation is not blocking soffit vents.
Safety note

Soffit vents blocked by insulation are the single most common ventilation issue. Fixing it is often a 1-hour job. It protects your entire roof investment.
