Shingles are usually cheaper to install. Metal is usually the higher first check. Whether metal is cheaper to own depends on how long you stay, whether you would pay for another shingle cycle, and what the two written specs actually include. That is the comparison. It is not a printed lifespan contest, and this page will not invent a 30-year spreadsheet for your address.

Top Pro Roofing SD is a referral service. We do not install either product or set prices. Call (760) 750-5557 for a match with a licensed independent C-39. Ask that roofer to price this roof, tear-off included, both ways.

The upfront cost: shingles almost always win

Architectural shingles are still the common residential install: laminated product, faster for most crews than standing seam, widely stocked. A complete bid should include tear-off, underlayment, shingles, flashing, ventilation, and cleanup. “Architectural shingles” is a category, not a spec. Ask for brand, line, color, nailing pattern, and wind listing.

Standing-seam metal is a formed-panel system. Material costs more. The crew has to be trained on that system. Clips, seams, coatings, and penetration details are the job. Stone-coated steel is a different product again. Do not compare a standing-seam quote to a shingle quote that skipped tear-off.

If two bids reverse the usual order (metal cheaper on day one), they are probably not the same roof. Read the spec. More pricing context, still not your invoice: metal roof cost in San Diego and new roof cost in San Diego. We will not publish a multiplier or a whole-house total here.

Ownership math without fake year counts

Do not treat “30-year shingle” or “50-year metal” as a calendar. Labels are warranty classes and marketing. UV, ventilation, salt, and installation decide when you write the next check. Inland mesas (Mira Mesa, Escondido, El Cajon) cook asphalt binders. Coastal streets ask more of coatings and fasteners.

What you can compare without inventing a lifespan:

QuestionShinglesStanding-seam metal
First checkUsually lowerUsually higher
Later reroof in a long stayOften in playOften not, if the system is sound
Repair styleField patches, boots, tabsMostly flashings, fasteners, coatings, penetrations
FireClass A products existNon-combustible panel; the assembly still has to be listed
HeatDark asphalt holds more solar heatCool colors and coatings can shed more sun

Ask the matched roofer to put both ownership stories on one page: install now, likely maintenance, and whether a second shingle cycle is in your plans. If they fill that page with guaranteed year counts, ask for the product warranty PDF instead. Related: how long does a roof last in San Diego.

Energy, insurance, and resale, without invented savings

Cooling. Dark shingles soak sun. Lighter metal can reflect more of it. ENERGY STAR publishes cool-roof research. The California Energy Commission publishes Title 24, Part 6. Read the current live standards for this address, slope, and project type. Do not treat Title 24 as a default. Treat bill savings as house-specific: attic air, insulation, color, and shade matter. Ask whether a cool color is in the spec, and whether the AHJ requires it for this permit. SDG&E rates are high. That still does not let this page invent a monthly credit.

Insurance. California carriers care about fire. Metal is non-combustible. Listed Class A shingle assemblies also exist. Class A is not a countywide fact. Do not assume a discount. Ask your carrier what they credit, then ask the roofer for the assembly documents that match. Wind listings are product-specific: 150 mph wind-rated shingles.

Resale. A tired shingle roof is a buyer deduction. A sound metal roof is easier to explain. We will not invent a recoup percentage. Ask your agent how roofs are showing up in your neighborhood’s inspections.

Coastal vs inland: the spec changes even when the question is “cheaper”

La Jolla is not Alpine. On the coast, metal needs a coating and fastener system meant for marine air. Bare or cheaply coated panels stain and corrode. Shingles can hold moisture and show algae. Inland, UV and ember questions dominate. Neither climate awards a winner by itself. The bid has to name the exposure. More: best roof material for coastal climates.

Which one fits this house

Architectural shingles if the first check is the constraint, you may sell before another cycle, or the house and HOA want that look.

Standing-seam metal if you are staying, you want fewer reroof cycles, you care about reflected heat, or you are on the coast or in a fire-exposed setting and the spec is built for that.

Shingles are a complete, legitimate roof when they are specified and installed as a system. Metal is a different system with a different first price. County replacement context: San Diego roof replacement cost.

Frequently asked questions

Are metal roofs cheaper than shingles?

Usually not on day one. They can be cheaper to own if you stay through a shingle replacement cycle. Ask for both quotes on the same measured roof.

Are metal roofs more expensive than shingles?

Usually yes to install. If metal comes in cheaper, read the spec. Something was probably left out of one of them.

What is the cost of metal vs shingles over 30 years?

It depends on whether you pay for a second shingle roof in that window, and on maintenance of flashings on both systems. We will not invent a 30-year total.
