Most asphalt shingles come three bundles to a square. One bundle is packaged to cover about 33 square feet. That is the usual count for three-tab and architectural (dimensional) shingles. Heavier designer lines can ship four or five bundles per square so each pack stays liftable. The coverage figure on the wrapper is the source, not a blog guess.
A square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Suppliers sell by the bundle. Roofers measure and bid by the square. Translating those two units is how you check whether a materials list matches the takeoff.

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three bundles make one square for standard shingles. Each of those packs is meant to cover roughly 33.3 square feet. 3 × 33.3 sq ft = 100 sq ft = one square.
Thick laminate and designer lines, such as GAF Grand Sequoia or CertainTeed Grand Manor, weigh more per piece. Manufacturers often split a square into four or five smaller bundles. If the spec names a designer product, read the coverage on that SKU. Do not assume three.
ARMA application practice sizes shingles by coverage, not by listing square footage. How much roofing you need is the footprint and pitch step before this math.
How many shingles are in a bundle?
Piece count moves with the product. Three-tab pieces are smaller, so a bundle often holds more tabs. Architectural shingles are larger and thicker, so a bundle often holds fewer. Typical ranges you will see on wrappers land around 21 to 29 pieces, with three-tab packs often near the high 20s and architectural packs often in the low-to-mid 20s.
Do not estimate a roof by counting tabs. Coverage per square is what stays consistent when the manufacturer packaged the product that way. Measure in squares, then order the bundle count the product sheet lists.
How many square feet does a bundle of shingles cover?
A standard three-bundle-per-square product covers about 33 square feet per bundle. A designer pack that needs four or five bundles per square covers less per bundle, often in the low 20s of square feet. Confirm on the wrapper.
To reverse the math: divide roof square footage by the coverage printed on that bundle, then round up. Working in squares is cleaner. 1,500 sq ft of roof surface is 15 squares. At three bundles per square that is 45 field bundles before waste. A licensed takeoff still beats a listing-size guess, because living area is not roof area.
How much does a bundle of shingles weigh?
Asphalt shingle bundles are heavy enough that crews carry them one at a time. Typical published pack weights for three-tab and architectural lines often fall in a 50 to 80 pound band. Designer packs can sit at the high end or above that so the square can be split into more bundles. A three-bundle square then puts on the order of 150 to 240 pounds of shingle on 100 square feet of deck, before underlayment and fasteners.
Weight is a framing question when you change covering class, for example three-tab to tile. It is also why crews stage bundles across the deck instead of stacking a pallet in one spot. Ask the matched C-39 to confirm load if the covering type is changing.
Do not use a blog price for a bundle
Retail bundle prices move with brand, color, cool-roof listing, and the yard. Installed work also includes underlayment, metal, ridge, tear-off, disposal, labor, and the permit. We will not invent a 2026 San Diego bundle or square rate here.
Compare written proposals that name the product and the square count. Context without a rate card: roof cost per square and new roof cost in San Diego. Those pages are still not a substitute for a takeoff on this house.
Worked example: bundles for a San Diego reroof
A single-story house with about 20 squares of roof surface needs 60 field bundles of a three-bundle-per-square architectural product before waste. A 2,000 sq ft listing is not automatically 20 squares. Pitch, two-story footprint, and overhangs change the surface. See roofing squares for a 2,000 sq ft house and roof pitch.
Waste covers starter, ridge cap, and cuts at hips, valleys, dormers, and skylights. A simple gable often uses about 10 percent. A cut-up hillside or tract roof with many hips and valleys often needs closer to 15 percent. On 20 squares, 10 percent waste is about 66 bundles of a three-bundle product. A steep or complex roof can need more. Order from the same production run when you want matching repair stock.
If the product is four or five bundles per square, multiply squares by that factor, then add waste. The wrapper still wins.
Frequently asked questions
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three for standard three-tab and architectural shingles that are packaged that way. Designer and luxury laminates often take four or five. Read the wrapper.
How many shingles are in one bundle?
Often about 21 to 29 pieces, with three-tab packs usually holding more pieces than architectural packs. Coverage, not piece count, is how you size the order.
How many square feet does a bundle of shingles cover?
About 33 square feet when three bundles make a square. Designer packs cover less per bundle.
How much does a bundle of shingles weigh?
Often in a 50 to 80 pound band for common asphalt packs. Confirm the product sheet. We will not quote a delivery fee.
How many bundles do I need for a 2,000 sq ft roof?
Only after a takeoff. A single-story ranch with about 20 squares of surface would need about 60 field bundles of a three-bundle product plus waste. A two-story house with the same living area usually has a smaller roof footprint.
Should I buy extra bundles for waste?
Yes. Plan about 10 percent on a simple gable and up to about 15 percent on a complex roof. Same-run extras help later repairs. The matched roofer should put the order on the proposal.
If the square count is still a guess from listing size, get a licensed measurement. Call (760) 750-5557. We will connect you with a local C-39 for a takeoff and a written proposal. You contract with that roofer. Verify the license at the CSLB license check. Related: roof inspection, roof replacement.
