Top Pro Roofing SD is a referral marketplace. We connect San Diego County homeowners with CSLB-licensed roofers. We do not install roofs and we do not pick a brand because of a dealer contract. Call (760) 750-5557.

The “best” shingle is not one SKU for the whole county. A product that holds up in Rancho Bernardo can be the wrong fastener and algae spec in La Jolla.

Which shingles are best in San Diego?

For most houses, an architectural shingle in a Class A listed assembly. West of I-5, CertainTeed Landmark PRO or Owens Corning Duration for seal strip, nailing zone, and salt-aware metal. Inland heat (El Cajon, Santee, Poway, Escondido) wants a CRRC-listed cool-roof color such as GAF Timberline HDZ RS when Title 24 or the HOA requires it. Three-tab is not the pick for a 2026 reroof.

We will not invent a county-wide “90% of roofs” winner or an installed price.

What “best” means here (sun, salt, fire, wind)

San Diego weather is easy on people and hard on asphalt.

Intense sun

UV dries asphalt and loosens granules into the gutters. Once granules are gone, the mat cooks faster. A good San Diego shingle needs a ceramic granule that stays put and a mat heavy enough for south and west slopes inland.

Salt air

From Imperial Beach to Oceanside, moist salt air attacks fasteners and flashings first. It can also weaken seal strips so wind gets under the course. Coastal specs need a strong sealant and nails the licensed roofer will actually use in that zone (often stainless or hot-dipped galvanized, not the cheapest electroplated). Deeper material context: best roof material for coastal climates.

Fire risk

Much of the county is a high fire hazard area. Code wants a Class A assembly: shingles, underlayment, and deck as listed, not a Class A name on the wrapper alone.

Wind events

Santa Ana inland and coastal storms both lift poorly nailed shingles. Published ratings (often 110 mph vs 130 mph on current architectural sheets) assume the listed nail count and a cured seal. See 150 mph wind-rated shingles.

Top architectural shingles for coastal San Diego

In Del Mar, Encinitas, and Coronado, salt and wind outrank inland attic heat. Marine layer also feeds algae on north slopes.

Licensed roofers usually want a heavier laminate and a nailing story you can see on the shingle.

CertainTeed Landmark PRO

Heavier than standard Landmark. Quadra-Bond is CertainTeed’s name for the adhesive between laminate layers. NailTrak is the marked nailing zone. Useful when humidity and temperature swings work at delamination. Confirm current wind and algae language on the sheet.

Owens Corning Duration

SureNail is a woven fabric strip in the nailing zone. Wind pull is spread across that fabric instead of a narrow asphalt strip. That is why Duration shows up on many asphalt shingle bids near the water. It is not a hurricane product. It is a fastening product.

Top picks for inland heat zones

East of the marine layer (El Cajon, Santee, Poway, Escondido), salt drops off and UV and attic heat take over. The useful upgrade is a cool-roof color with a CRRC listing, not a darker non-listed chip that looks good on a phone.

Cool-roof versions of major lines use granules aimed at higher solar reflectance. A dark field still runs hotter than a listed lighter or “cool” blend. We will not invent surface temperatures or a degree drop.

GAF Timberline HDZ RS is the common named example on inland bids. Owens Corning and CertainTeed also sell CRRC-listed colors; Duration FLEX is an impact SKU, not automatically a cool-roof color. Meet Title 24 with the California Energy Commission rules that apply to this slope and scope. Details: cool roof Title 24.

Look for the CRRC label and the aged Solar Reflectance Index when the permit set cares. Higher SRI is the energy story; the licensed roofer still has to install the listed assembly.

Algae-resistant lines worth asking about

Black streaks on the north face are usually Gloeocapsa magma, not smog. It likes shade and moisture. It can work on limestone filler and granules over time. Background: roof algae streaks.

Algae packages embed copper (or similar) granules so rinse water carries a small biocide dose down the field. GAF StainGuard Plus, CertainTeed StreakFighter, Owens Corning StreakGuard, and 3M Scotchgard on Atlas/Malarkey are the names on current bags. Read the years on the PDF. We will not invent a price premium. Ask the bid to name the algae line rather than a generic “architectural.”

What licensed roofers actually choose

There is no single SKU that is “the San Diego shingle.” Common, defensible picks:

  • Coastal architectural: Duration (SureNail) or Landmark PRO, stainless or hot-dipped nails, listed underlayment
  • Inland architectural with a cool-roof trigger: a CRRC-listed color in Timberline HDZ RS or the equal listed color from Owens Corning or CertainTeed
  • HOA already approved a brand: that brand, in the approved color, with the enhanced warranty the contractor can actually register

Duration is a frequent workhorse because the nailing strip is visible and the color range is wide. Landmark PRO is the usual CertainTeed peer. GAF HDZ is the usual volume stock. None of that is a dealer exclusive, and none of it is 90% of the county.

Installation quality still decides whether you get the early years or a leak in year two. Brand comparison: CertainTeed vs Owens Corning and best roofing brands.
