Top Pro Roofing SD is a referral marketplace. We connect San Diego County homeowners with CSLB-licensed roofers. We do not install, we do not hold a C-39 license, and we do not certify GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum, CertainTeed SELECT, Eagle, or Decra installers. Call (760) 750-5557.

TL;DR

This page compares roofing materials and manufacturers, not Yelp lists of local companies.

  • Asphalt shingles: GAF and Owens Corning are the two names you will see most on San Diego bids. CertainTeed is the usual third. Malarkey is a polymer-modified upgrade some C-39s spec.
  • Concrete and clay tile: Eagle is common because the Rialto plant is close. Westlake Royal (formerly Boral) is the other high-volume line. Both show up on HOA lists.
  • Metal panels: McElroy and Drexel are common standing-seam names. Decra and Boral Steel (Westlake) sit in stone-coated steel.
  • Flat roofs: GAF EverGuard, Carlisle, and Johns Manville are the commercial-grade single-ply names most bids use.
  • Warranties look similar on the bag. The real split is whether that contractor can register the enhanced program.
  • Your installer matters more than the logo. A long-warranty shingle leaks early if it is nailed wrong.

We will not invent installed prices, “80% of our network,” or insurance discounts. Read the brand sections, then verify the contractor on the manufacturer’s public locator and at CSLB.

Why brand matters (and where it doesn’t)

Manufacturers spend a lot of money convincing homeowners that the product on the truck is the main decision. For a typical architectural shingle in San Diego, two top-tier brands are close on granule, wind, and algae language.

Where brand starts to matter:

  • Warranty length and transfer terms. Limited lifetime on one PDF is not the same as another, especially labor after the early period.
  • Certified installer access. Enhanced warranties usually require GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum, or CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster (or the current equivalent listing).
  • Color and profile. Some profiles are not copyable. Eagle Capistrano and Decra Villa Tile are examples.
  • Local stock. A brand that is special-order in this county means slower repairs.

Where brand does not matter much:

  • Basic architectural shingles. GAF Timberline HDZ vs Owens Corning Duration vs CertainTeed Landmark is mostly a coin flip on the mat. See CertainTeed vs Owens Corning and GAF vs Owens Corning.
  • Standard concrete tile. Eagle and Westlake both make flat, low, and medium profiles that perform as concrete tile.

Pick two or three brands that fit the house and HOA, then choose the licensed installer by CSLB status and the manufacturer listing that matches the warranty you want.

GAF. Largest North American shingle maker. Timberline HDZ is the architectural SKU you will see most. Enhanced warranty needs a currently listed Master Elite (or the tier named on the PDF).

Owens Corning. SureNail (fabric in the nailing zone) is the field difference. Duration is the workhorse line.

CertainTeed. Saint-Gobain. Landmark is mid-tier architectural. Landmark Pro is the heavier step. SELECT ShingleMaster is the enhanced-warranty listing.

Atlas. Pinnacle Pristine with 3M Scotchgard is the algae story. Harder to source here.

IKO. Canadian. Cambridge entry architectural, Dynasty the upgrade. Less often specified locally.

Malarkey. Oregon. Polymer-modified asphalt. Legacy is the premium line. Niche in San Diego, not a default stock color at every yard.

Tile brands

Tile is common in San Diego: Spanish colonial neighborhoods, mid-century ranches, and many HOA tracts. Cost context (not a bid): tile roof replacement.

Vande Hey-RaleighConcrete (premium)Custom blendsLimited; read the PDFCustom order

Eagle Roofing Products. Rialto, CA. Freight and lead time are why many local C-39s default to Eagle. Capistrano (low S-tile) and Malibu (flat) are common. Concrete vs clay.

Westlake Royal Roofing. Boral sold to Westlake in 2022. Same plants, new name. Saxony is the flagship concrete. Stone-coated steel sits under the Boral Steel / Decra family below.

MCA Clay Roof Tile. Corona, CA. True two-piece Mission and hand-craft variation. Longer lead than Eagle.

Crown Roof Tiles. California clay, Spanish and Mediterranean. Historic and custom more than tract HOA.

Vande Hey-Raleigh. Ships nationally. Premium concrete finishes you will not get from Eagle or Westlake.

For most HOA tile work you are choosing Eagle vs Westlake because both have long color-blend histories on file with master-planned associations.

Metal brands

Metal is specified more in back-country fire zones (Ramona, Alpine, Julian) and on coastal houses that want a long paint system in salt air. Coastal material: best roof material for coastal climates.

BrandProduct typeCommon gaugesPaint warrantyWhere it fits

McElroy Metal. Maxima is a common architectural standing-seam name. PVDF (Kynar 500) is the coastal paint family to ask for by name.

Drexel Metals. Residential and custom panels.

ATAS International. Standing seam and metal shingle.

Pac-Clad (Petersen Aluminum). Carlisle-owned. Snap-Clad shows up on commercial and some residential specs.

Shingle vs metal life: 50-year shingles vs metal.

Stone-coated steel

Stone-coated steel is steel with a crushed-stone granule coating. It can mimic tile or shake at a fraction of concrete tile weight. Common on tile-to-metal conversions when the structure cannot carry another concrete load.

  • Decra. Villa Tile, Tile, Shake, and Shingle profiles. Westlake family. Lifetime limited language is on the current PDF, not this page.
  • Boral Steel. Sister brand. Saxony Slate and Pine-Crest Shake are common names.
  • Metro Roofs. Smaller. Harder to find a currently listed installer here.

It is Class A in listed assemblies. Weight is much lower than concrete tile. If existing tile is spalled and the structure is borderline, this is the conversation with the licensed roofer and, if needed, a structural note. We will not invent pounds per square as a design value.

Flat roof and TPO

Flat sections (mid-century, additions, garage roofs) are usually single-ply today.

  • GAF EverGuard. TPO and PVC.
  • Carlisle SynTec. Sure-Weld TPO is a common commercial spec name.
  • Johns Manville. TPO and EPDM.
  • Versico. Carlisle sister brand, different distributor path.
  • Mule-Hide. House brand through ABC Supply. Same membrane families, often quoted on small residential flats.

On a small residential flat, detailing at penetrations, parapets, and drains matters more than the logo. The membrane is the easy part.

How installer certifications work

Major manufacturers run installer programs. The contractor agrees to install per spec, the maker may audit, and the contractor can register enhanced warranties.

ProgramWhat to verify
GAF Master ElitePublic locator. Enhanced System Plus / Silver Pledge / Golden Pledge paths are on GAF’s current PDFs
Owens Corning Preferred / PlatinumPublic locator. Platinum Protection is the enhanced path
CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMasterPublic locator. Golden Pledge / star-tier path is on CertainTeed’s current PDFs
Decra Authorized InstallerLocator on Decra’s site
EagleDistributor and installer directory; no GAF-style star program

A standard materials warranty is not the enhanced workmanship path. Ask which document the contractor can register, then look them up.

This marketplace does not award those titles.

Why the installer matters more than the brand

These fail regardless of logo:

  • Nails too high (shiners) or too low
  • Underlayment laps that do not shed
  • Missing starter on rakes
  • Sidewall flashing cut backwards
  • Valleys short of the deck edge
  • Penetrations caulked instead of flashed
  • Missing tile clips on perimeter rows
  • TPO seams welded cold

If you must choose between a top-shelf shingle with an unlisted contractor and a mid-tier shingle with a currently listed elite contractor, take the listed contractor.

How to verify certifications

Search by ZIP. If they are not listed, they cannot register the enhanced warranty. Also pull CSLB.

SD-specific availability

Eagle is the default tile at many yards because Rialto is close. Westlake or MCA can mean a longer lead.

GAF is the default shingle stock at ABC, Allied, and Beacon. Owens Corning is close behind. CertainTeed is carried; not every blend is on the floor.

Metal is often roll-formed to length. Lead times are project-specific. Coastal specs should name PVDF / Kynar 500, not a generic SMP, from La Jolla through Imperial Beach.

HOA lists are real. Carmel Valley, 4S Ranch, Del Sur, Eastlake, and similar associations usually pre-approve products and colors. Eagle and Westlake are usually on tile lists. GAF Timberline HDZ in standard colors is often on shingle lists. Off-list adds review time.

Fire zones need a listed Class A assembly. East county and back country typically do. Matching underlayment and deck to the covering is required. Do not assume the bag is enough.

FAQ

Is a more expensive shingle worth it?

Stepping from three-tab to architectural is the usual durability step. Stepping from a standard architectural to a heavier or designer SKU is partly life, partly look, and partly warranty PDF. We will not invent a year-payback.

Do brand warranties actually pay out?

When there is a documented manufacturing defect and the registration is valid, major brands process claims. The process is paperwork. Most leaks are still installation.

Can I install it myself and keep the enhanced warranty?

You can install it. You get the standard materials path, not the certified-contractor enhanced path.

What is the difference between a 30-year and a 50-year shingle?

Weight, mat, and warranty math. Real-world life is not double. Inland UV is where the heavier SKU earns more of its keep.

Should I match my neighbor’s roof?

In an HOA, often required. Outside an HOA it is resale and taste, not function.

Is metal worth it vs shingle?

For some coastal and fire-zone houses, a licensed roofer will argue durability and assembly. For inland tract shingle, the upfront bid is usually much higher. We will not invent a 2x or 3x multiplier. Compare named bids.

What licensed roofers around here bid most often

Brand-agnostic quoting is normal. Fit the house, HOA, and timeline.

  • Shingle: GAF Timberline HDZ when a Master Elite can register the enhanced GAF path, or Duration / Landmark when those listings and colors win.
  • Tile: Eagle Capistrano or Malibu in HOA blends; Westlake when matching an existing Westlake/Boral roof.
  • Tile-to-metal: Decra Villa Tile to keep a tile look, or standing seam (McElroy Maxima or similar) for a modern plane.
  • Coastal custom: architectural standing seam in a named PVDF finish.
  • Flat: GAF EverGuard when the steep roof is already GAF; Carlisle or equal for standalone flats.
