Top Pro Roofing SD is a referral marketplace. We connect San Diego County homeowners with CSLB-licensed roofers. We do not install roofs, we do not hold a C-39 license, and we do not certify anyone as a CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster or Owens Corning Platinum contractor. Call (760) 750-5557.
TL;DR
Neither CertainTeed nor Owens Corning is universally better. Landmark and Duration are both Class A architectural shingles, and most San Diego homeowners cannot tell them apart from the curb. CertainTeed’s selling point is often the enhanced Golden Pledge path when a certified applicator can actually register it, plus heavier Landmark Pro and Premium mats. Owens Corning’s selling point is often the SureNail nailing strip and Class 4 options (Duration Flex and Storm) when the bid names those SKUs.
We will not invent installed dollars per square. Ask for two named products on the same roof, then pick the licensed installer who can register the warranty PDF in the bid. A poorly installed top-shelf shingle fails before a correctly installed mid-tier one. Wind nailing detail sits in 150 mph wind-rated shingles for San Diego.
Which is better: CertainTeed or Owens Corning?
There is no single winner. Maryland and Florida comparison posts often pick a brand. That verdict does not travel. San Diego is salt air, Santa Ana wind, Title 24 cool-roof colors, and HOA color lists, not freeze-thaw or hail.
Use this split:
- Choose CertainTeed Landmark if the licensed roofer can show current CertainTeed certification and register the enhanced warranty you were promised, or if you need Landmark Pro or Premium weight and a CertainTeed color the HOA already approved.
- Choose Owens Corning Duration if the licensed roofer can show current Owens Corning certification, if you want the SureNail strip on a windy inland roof, or if your carrier asks about Class 4 and the quote is Duration Flex or Storm rather than standard Duration.
- Do not choose from a brochure. Ask which warranty document, which nailing pattern, and which starter, hip, and ridge components are in the bid.
Landmark vs Duration
Landmark is CertainTeed’s architectural family. Duration is Owens Corning’s. That is the comparison most homeowners mean when they type “CertainTeed vs Owens Corning.”
Standard Landmark and standard Duration are peers: dual-layer laminate, Class A fire, manufacturer algae coverage on current sheets, limited-lifetime material language, and a higher published wind rating only with the upgraded nail pattern plus matching starter. Duration’s SureNail fabric strip is the practical field difference. Landmark’s NailTrak zone is wider than old three-tab, but it is not a woven reinforcement strip.
Confirm wind mph, algae years, and transfer rules on the current product sheet. Those numbers change by SKU and year.
Landmark Pro vs Duration
This is a different matchup than Landmark vs Duration.
Landmark Pro is CertainTeed’s heavier mid-step, with a deeper shadow line than standard Landmark. Duration is Owens Corning’s standard architectural. If a bid sets Landmark Pro against Duration, you are comparing CertainTeed’s mid-tier to Owens Corning’s standard tier.
Ask for the peer quote: Landmark Pro vs Duration Designer or Duration Flex, or standard Landmark vs Duration. Mixing tiers is how “which is better” arguments get fake.
Quick comparison summary
| Feature | CertainTeed Landmark | Owens Corning Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Product tier | Architectural laminate | Architectural |
| Published wind (typical current sheets) | Higher mph only with the listed nail count plus matching starter and hip | Higher mph with SureNail plus the listed nail count |
| Fire rating | Class A when the listed assembly is used | Class A |
| Algae language | StreakFighter on current Landmark sheets | StreakGuard on current Duration sheets |
| Base warranty | Limited lifetime material language, prorated after the early period | Limited lifetime material language, prorated after the early period |
| Enhanced warranty | Golden Pledge path, only if that installer can register it | Platinum Protection path, only if that installer can register it |
| Installed cost | Not published here. Compare named bids | Not published here. Compare named bids |
| Signature feature | Dual-layer construction, NailTrak nailing zone | SureNail reinforced nailing strip |
Both lines are sold as meeting typical San Diego County shingle code when installed as a listed assembly. Both carry ICC-ES evaluation reports for the listed products. Beyond that, the choice is the fine print and whether the installer can register the enhanced warranty. We do not invent a spread in dollars between the two brands.
CertainTeed Landmark lineup overview
CertainTeed sells several Landmark tiers, plus a designer line above them.
Landmark (standard) is the entry into the family. Dual-layer fiberglass construction. This is the workhorse SKU on many San Diego shingle reroofs at this brand.
Landmark Pro is the mid-step. Heavier mat, deeper shadow lines, and stronger published wind language on current sheets. The visual difference from the curb is real, especially on north-facing slopes where shadow depth matters.
Landmark Premium is the top of the asphalt Landmark line: more dimensional look and the longest standard terms CertainTeed publishes for that family.
Above that sits the Presidential designer line, which mimics shake or slate. Different product category, not what most homeowners are cross-shopping when they ask about Landmark.
For warranty terms, use CertainTeed’s current documentation at certainteed.com, not a blog table.
Owens Corning Duration lineup overview
Duration is the standard architectural. The signature SureNail strip is woven into the nailing zone. Published wind language on current sheets assumes the listed fastening.
Duration Storm uses an SBS-modified asphalt formula aimed at hail and high-wind regions. San Diego is not a hail market. A licensed roofer may still spec it when a carrier or impact rating is the driver.
Duration Flex is the Class 4 impact option in this family. Useful if your carrier discounts Class 4, or if inland wind-driven debris is the concern. It is not automatic on a standard Duration bid.
TruDefinition Duration Designer sits at the top of the standard architectural line: heavier appearance and a broader color palette.

Warranty comparison: the part most homeowners get wrong
This is where the two brands actually diverge on paper.
Both manufacturers offer “Limited Lifetime” as the standard product warranty. That phrase covers manufacturing defects on a schedule that prorates after an early period. It is not a promise that labor is covered for the life of the house.
CertainTeed warranty path
| Warranty | What to confirm on the PDF |
|---|---|
| Standard limited lifetime | Defects only, prorated after the early period, transfer rules in the document |
| SureStart (or current equivalent early period) | Full material language for a limited early window. Labor is not automatic |
| 4-Star / 5-Star Golden Pledge | Enhanced material plus workmanship language, only if the installer can register it |
Golden Pledge is the enhanced CertainTeed path homeowners often want if they are staying in the house. It is also the path that can hold the manufacturer to workmanship language, not just the shingle, when the program rules are met.
The catch: only contractors CertainTeed currently lists at the required SELECT / Master Shingle Applicator tier can register that enhanced warranty. If a bid never names the document and the look-up, assume you are buying the base warranty.
Owens Corning warranty path
| Warranty | What to confirm on the PDF |
|---|---|
| Standard limited lifetime | Defects only, prorated after the early period, transfer rules in the document |
| TruPROtection (or current early period name) | Early full-material window. Labor is not automatic |
| System Protection / Platinum Protection | Enhanced component and workmanship language, only if that installer can register it |
Owens Corning’s Platinum Protection is the enhanced peer of Golden Pledge. It requires the installer to be in Owens Corning’s current Platinum / Platinum Preferred listing. Look them up. Do not take a verbal “50-year warranty.”
The takeaway: the top-tier programs are comparable in intent. The standard warranties are also comparable, and both are weaker than most homeowners assume after the early period. The real question is whether your installer can offer the top tier on this roof.
Wind rating and Santa Ana relevance
Both families publish a higher mph rating with the proper installation. That is a laboratory number under listed nailing, enhanced starter on eaves and rakes, and a cured adhesive bond. In the field those conditions are often not met.
A 4-nail pattern may still be legal in California on some roofs. It usually caps the warranty wind speed below the upgraded figure. If the house sits in a Santa Ana corridor, ask the licensed roofer to put the nail count in the bid.
Owens Corning’s SureNail strip gives a wider nailing target with a reinforced fabric layer. CertainTeed’s NailTrak is a marked nailing zone without that woven strip. Either shingle can meet the published rating only if installed that way.
For homes in Ramona, Alpine, Jamul, Valley Center, and the Santa Ana corridor through Poway and Escondido, a qualified C-39 typically specs the upgraded nail pattern. Neither brand survives a cheap nail pattern.
Coastal homes in Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Solana Beach see less peak inland wind and more marine layer and salt. Material choice at the coast is in the best roof material for coastal climates.
Class A fire rating
Both CertainTeed Landmark and Owens Corning Duration carry a Class A fire rating when used in a listed ASTM E108 assembly. That matters in San Diego because Title 24 and CalFire WUI rules treat much of inland San Diego County as a high fire hazard area. Class A is required in those zones for the assembly, not as a marketing badge on the shingle bag alone.
The shingle brand is a small part of ember performance next to underlayment, eave detail, and vent screens. Those sit in our WUI roofing service pages, not in a brand shoot-out.
San Diego specific performance: salt air, UV, granule retention
Manufacturer spec sheets do not grade salt air for you.
Salt air does not dissolve asphalt. It does attack fasteners, flashing, drip edge, and metal accessories. Neither brand should go on a coastal home with bargain electroplated nails if the licensed roofer would otherwise spec stainless or hot-dipped galvanized. Failure often starts at the metal, not the mat.
UV is hard on south and west slopes inland. Both brands use ceramic-coated granules. We will not invent a granule-loss rate or a year-by-year winner. Heavier Landmark Pro and Duration Designer mats are the usual upgrade when the concern is long UV exposure. Confirm that on the product sheet.
Algae coverage is StreakFighter on CertainTeed and StreakGuard on Owens Corning on current architectural sheets. North-facing slopes in Encinitas and Carlsbad stay wetter under marine layer. Read the algae years on the PDF. Marine-layer aging is also in coastal roof salt damage data.
Cost: compare bids, not a blog table
We do not publish installed dollars per square or a “typical 25-square roof” total. Those figures go stale and they are not a fact this referral site can stand behind.
What you can check without a fake price: the spread between two installers quoting the same named shingle is often larger than the spread between Landmark and Duration at the same tier. Compare warranty tier, nail pattern, underlayment, flashing metal, and disposal on the same scope.

Color and style options for SD architecture
Both brands have a strong color range.
For Spanish revival and Mediterranean homes (Mission Hills, Kensington, La Jolla, pockets of North County), warmer browns and reds are the usual HOA match. CertainTeed names such as Resawn Shake and Burnt Sienna, and Owens Corning names such as Terra Cotta and Aged Copper, show up on those lists. Confirm the current color name before ordering.
For modern and ranch-style homes (older Vista, San Marcos, inland tracts), cooler tones are common: charcoal, driftwood, estate gray, onyx.
For coastal craftsman and beach cottages (Encinitas, Cardiff, Leucadia, parts of Carlsbad), muted weathered colors hide UV fade better than a saturated showroom chip.
Some HOAs still permit shingle and publish an approved color list. Pull that list before ordering.
Installer certification: who can offer the top warranty?
This is the shopping step that actually changes the paper.
For CertainTeed’s Golden Pledge: the installer must currently appear in CertainTeed’s public locator at the required SELECT / ShingleMaster tier. Lookup: certainteed.com.
For Owens Corning’s Platinum Protection: the installer must currently appear as Platinum / Platinum Preferred at owenscorning.com.
A licensed California C-39 without that manufacturer listing can still install the shingle correctly. The homeowner then gets the base limited lifetime terms, not the enhanced workmanship path.
Verify the license at the CSLB license check before signing. This site does not certify those manufacturer tiers.
When to pick CertainTeed
Pick CertainTeed Landmark or Landmark Pro when:
- You have confirmed a currently listed SELECT / ShingleMaster contractor and the Golden Pledge document is the priority
- You prefer that color palette, especially warmer shake and sienna tones the HOA already approved
- The job is inland wind and the bid names Landmark Pro plus the upgraded nail pattern
- You are matching a neighborhood where CertainTeed is already the installed standard
When to pick Owens Corning
Pick Owens Corning Duration when:
- You have confirmed a currently listed Platinum contractor and the Platinum Protection document is the priority
- You want the SureNail strip on a coastal or Santa Ana site
- The TruDefinition Designer color matches the house better
- Your insurance carrier named an Owens Corning Class 4 SKU in writing (Duration Flex or Storm)
Frequently asked questions
Is CertainTeed or Owens Corning better for San Diego coastal homes?
Both perform as asphalt. The shingle does not react to chloride the way steel does. Fastener spec (stainless or hot-dipped galvanized) and flashing metal matter more. Either brand outlasts cheap fasteners if those get substituted.
Which one has the better warranty?
Top-tier vs top-tier (Golden Pledge vs Platinum Protection), they are similar in intent. The standard warranties on both are weaker than most homeowners assume after the early period. The decisive factor is whether your installer holds the current listing.
How long do these shingles actually last in San Diego?
Service life depends on slope, ventilation, fastening, and UV. Heavier Landmark Pro and Duration Designer mats are the usual longer-wear pick. We will not invent a year range as a guarantee. See how long a roof lasts in San Diego.
Are there cheaper alternatives that still hold up?
Both brands still sell three-tab below the architectural line. Wind ratings and service life are lower. See three-tab vs architectural shingles.
Do either of these meet California Title 24 cool roof requirements?
Both brands offer specific colors that are CRRC-listed. Not every color qualifies. Ask for the CRRC product ID before ordering. See the cool roof Title 24 guide.
What about Class 4 impact resistance for insurance discounts?
Owens Corning’s Duration Flex and Duration Storm carry Class 4 on current sheets. CertainTeed’s standard Landmark line does not; impact-rated CertainTeed products sit on other SKUs. If your carrier offers a discount, get the SKU in writing. We do not invent discount percents.
Can I mix brands across different parts of the roof?
You can physically, but you should not. Enhanced warranties require brand-consistent components (shingles, starter, hip and ridge, and sometimes underlayment). Mixing brands typically voids the workmanship-tier registration.
How to decide
- Start with the licensed installer, not the brand. Pull the CSLB number. Check CertainTeed or Owens Corning’s public locator for the enhanced path you want.
- Match the product tier to the exposure. Inland windy zones usually get the heavier mat (Landmark Pro or Duration Designer). Coastal lower-peak-wind zones can use the standard tier with upgraded fasteners.
- Read the warranty PDF. If someone says “50-year warranty” verbally, ask which document and which certification. Get the registration number after install.
- Do not overspend on the shingle to cover cheap labor. Landmark Premium nailed wrong is worse than standard Duration by a listed contractor.
- For HOA compliance, get written approval before ordering.
If you want named bids on both products for one roof, call (760) 750-5557. We will connect you with licensed San Diego roofers. Compare warranty tier and certification, not a blog price. When shingle is not the obvious winner, weigh tile and metal.
