Top Pro Roofing SD is a referral marketplace. We connect San Diego County homeowners with CSLB-licensed roofers. We do not hang gutters and we do not publish a 2026 per-linear-foot rate card. Call (760) 750-5557.

Gutters pulling off the fascia are not a cosmetic issue. They dump roof water at the stucco and foundation on the few days a year this county actually gets a storm. Replacement is a linear-foot job plus whatever wood they find behind the trough. National cost pages print wide bands. This page is how to make three local bids describe the same feet, material, and fascia scope.

We will not invent installed dollars per linear foot, a 175-foot whole-house total, a bundling discount, or a gutter-guard adder.

How to read a linear-foot bid

Most houses in the county land in a 150 to 200 linear foot conversation for the troughs, plus downspouts. Measure or have the contractor measure. Do not use living-area square footage.

Ask every bid to name:

  • Material: aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, or vinyl
  • Profile: 5-inch K-style vs 6-inch (hillside roofs that shed fast often want 6-inch)
  • Continuous (one-piece, formed on site) vs sectional (connectors at every joint)
  • Stories and access (two-story labor is not one-story labor)
  • Hanger type and spacing
  • Downspout count, size, and discharge
  • Removal and haul-away of the old gutters
  • Fascia inspection: included or not, and how rot is priced if they find it

Published national guides (HomeGuide, Angi, and similar) show vinyl at the low end, aluminum in the middle, steel above that, and copper far above. Use those pages as a reminder of rank, not as a San Diego invoice. Local labor, coastal fasteners, and fascia repair move the number.

Permits are often not required for trough-only swaps in the City of San Diego. They can be required if you replace structural fascia or framing. Confirm with Development Services or County PDS building. We will not invent a permit fee.

Labor is a large share of a gutter bill. That is why itemized quotes matter, and why combining gutter work with a reroof can cut duplicate staging. The savings are a bid comparison, not a percent we freeze. Gutter installation.

Continuous vs sectional, aluminum vs copper

Continuous gutters are rolled on site to the eave length. Fewer seams means fewer joint leaks. Coastal temperature swings and salt punish connectors. One-piece continuous is the usual permanent spec.

Sectional vinyl or pre-cut aluminum is the big-box DIY path. Every connector is a leak candidate when a storm dumps hard. We do not recommend sectional as a permanent system on a house you care about.

Aluminum is the default for most San Diego homes: light, available in many colors, and rust-resistant if the coating is intact. Service life depends on hangers, pitch, and whether overflow has already soaked the fascia. We will not invent a 20-year guarantee.

Copper is an architecture choice: Craftsman in North Park, some Spanish Colonial in Mission Hills, and similar. It patinas. It lasts a long time when detailed correctly. Budget it as its own bid, not an aluminum quote plus a round-up.

Galvanized steel is stronger than aluminum and rusts at cut edges if they are not sealed. It can make sense under heavy debris (eucalyptus). End-cap and cut-edge detailing matter.

When gutter damage is hiding fascia rot

Gutters do not rot. The fascia does. If troughs have pulled away, overflowed, or leaked at the back edge for a season, the board (and sometimes rafter tails) may be soft.

You will not see that from the driveway. A quote that never pulls a section of gutter is guessing. Fascia replacement is its own linear-foot line: pine vs primed composite vs PVC. PVC is the moisture conversation. Rafter tails need a licensed contractor, not a gutter-only helper.

Drip edge lands on the same board. Soft fascia means the roof edge is compromised. Roof inspection checklist. If rot is significant, a C-39 should look at the first stretch of deck above the eave, not only the trough. We will not invent fascia or rafter-tail prices.

Gutter guards: coastal honesty

Guards are sold hard. In this county they earn their keep when tree type matches the screen.

  • Heavy debris (Canary Island palm, eucalyptus, Torrey pine): micro-mesh fine enough for needles can cut cleaning frequency. It does not make cleaning zero.
  • Almost no trees: you are paying for a product you will not use. Annual cleaning of open gutters is enough.
  • Coastal salt: cheap plastic inserts can trap wet debris against the metal and speed corrosion. Skip them.

Guard cost is an add-on line. Professional cleaning is a recurring visit. Run your tree load against this bid. We will not invent a per-foot guard price or a per-visit cleaning fee. Gutter guard installation and gutter cleaning cost.

No guard is zero maintenance. Salt, shingle granules, and fines still land in the trough. “Never clean again” is a sales line. Shingle granule context: what deteriorates asphalt shingles. Salt on metals: coastal roof salt damage and best roof material for coastal climates.

Bundling with a reroof

The clean way to spend less per foot is to hang new gutters in the same mobilization as a replacement.

  1. One dumpster and one crew setup
  2. One ladder and fall-protection setup
  3. New drip edge and new gutters in the right order (gutters after drip edge)
  4. Fascia already exposed at tear-off, so rot is found once

Ask the reroof bid and the gutter bid to show combined vs separate. Manufacturers often want drip edge and functioning gutters as part of edge drainage for the covering warranty. Read the PDF. We will not invent a $400 to $900 or 15 to 25 percent savings.

If the roof is already in play: new roof cost in San Diego and roof replacement.

Gutter work attached to a structure is contractor-licensed work in California. Unlicensed work can complicate insurance. Check CSLB.

When to call

If troughs pull away, overflow, or you see stains on stucco below the eave, you want a C-39 who can see fascia, rafters, and drip edge, not only a gutter-only swap. Call (760) 750-5557. We will connect you. We do not hang the metal.
