Those tiny rocks in the gutter are not dirt. They are the ceramic-coated granules on asphalt shingles. Their job is to block UV before it cooks the asphalt underneath. Lose the granules, expose the asphalt, and the shingle ages faster. Related reading: what deteriorates asphalt shingles fastest in San Diego.
Top Pro Roofing SD is a referral service. We connect homeowners with independent C-39 roofers. We do not install shingles, file warranties, or publish remaining-life totals. Call (760) 750-5557.
A new shingle roof often sheds loose factory granules in the first season. That can be normal. What is not normal is heavy deposits year after year, bald patches visible from the street, or shingles that look smoother and shinier than they used to. Pattern, volume, and roof age matter more than a single handful after a storm.
What roofing granules actually do
If you scrape off a single granule, you get crushed mineral (often slate, quartz, or similar) with a colored, UV-resistant coating. They are embedded into the asphalt while the shingle is still warm at the plant. In service they start letting go over time.
Granules do three jobs.
UV protection. Asphalt is a petroleum product. Ultraviolet light breaks it down. Without the granule layer absorbing and reflecting UV, the asphalt dries, loses oils, cracks, and curls faster. Lose granules, and oxidation speeds up.
Fire classification. Mineral-surfaced asphalt shingles are commonly sold as Class A roof coverings under ASTM E108 or UL 790 testing. Class A is a tested assembly, not a promise about your house, and not a countywide fact. The California Building Standards Commission publishes California Building Code Chapter 7A for wildland-urban interface construction. Read the current live text. Verify the parcel with the AHJ, OSFM, and insurer. Do not treat Chapter 7A as automatic. Wood shake is a different fire conversation. State Fire Marshal listings: OSFM.
Color and reflectance. The color you see is the granule color. As granules wear, roofs look darker, shinier, and less even. Reflectance can drop, so the attic runs hotter, which can age the assembly from below as well.
When people quote a shingle life from a wrapper, they are talking about a granule layer under typical conditions. Once the granules are gone in patches, the rest of the shingle does not have much left to give. Confirm remaining life on your roof with an inspection, not a calendar.
Why granule loss happens
The causes are not equal.
UV aging. This is the usual story on San Diego County roofs. The asphalt that holds granules slowly loses oils. As it hardens and shrinks, rain, wind, and gravity finish the job. That is expected aging, not automatically a manufacturing defect.
Manufacturing defects. Real, but uncommon. When they happen they often show early as unusually heavy shedding across a field, sometimes in rows that match how bundles were laid. Manufacturers cover defects under their written warranties, with limits, proration, and installation conditions. Read the actual warranty, not a blog table.
Hail, wind, and impact. Large hail is uncommon here compared with the Plains. Santa Ana winds can drive debris (branches, palm fronds, neighbor material) hard enough to scour granules in spots. Tree limbs rubbing the same shingles do the same thing slowly.
Foot traffic. Walking on shingles, especially in heat, grinds granules loose. HVAC techs, satellite installers, holiday-light crews. This shows up as paths and footprints, not even wear across the slope.
Normal versus concerning loss patterns
Pattern, volume, and age tell you more than a single scoop from the gutter.
| Roof age | Often normal | Worth a closer look |
|---|---|---|
| First seasons | Loose granules after the first heavy rain | Bare asphalt visible from the ground, piles that look like a failed batch |
| Mid-life | Light mineral at downspout splash after storms | Bald patches, especially south or west, or shiny smooth areas |
| Late teens and later | Light, even loss with no bald spots from the curb | Heavy sludge after a recent gutter cleaning, plus cracking or curling |
These rows are a field guide, not a remaining-life calculator. We will not invent a two-to-five-year countdown from a handful of granules.
The other tell is pattern. Aging loss is fairly even on a slope, usually heavier on south and west exposures. Tight patches, streaks, or footprints point to localized damage. Loss along a single row can point to a batch or install issue. Loss around plumbing vents, chimneys, and skylights often means water sitting at flashing, not only UV.
How to inspect from the ground
You do not need to climb to learn most of this. Three checks, from the ground or a short ladder at gutter height.
Gutters. A light layer that looks like coarse sand can be fine. A solid sludge layer in a gutter you cleaned recently is a stronger signal. Scoop a handful. If the color matches the roof, that is where it came from.
Downspout discharge. Splash blocks, French drains, the driveway corner. A thin band of mineral after a year or two is common. Piles after one winter on an older roof are a different story.
The roof from the curb. Stand across the street with the sun behind you. Newer shingles look matte and even. Aging shingles develop shiny patches where asphalt is exposed. South-facing slopes usually age faster than north-facing slopes on the same house. Use the north slope as a control. If the south slope is dramatically darker, shinier, or patchier, that is granule loss showing.
If anything looks off, schedule a professional roof inspection rather than walking the field yourself. Asphalt in San Diego heat is brittle in the morning and soft in the afternoon. Neither is kind to a homeowner on a ladder.
San Diego microclimate impact
Where the house sits in the county changes the timeline. Same product, same install year, different outcome.
Coastal streets (La Jolla, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Coronado) get a marine layer that cuts peak heat. They trade that for salt on metal flashings, valleys, and vents. Inland valleys (Mira Mesa, Poway, Escondido, San Marcos) take more UV, especially on south slopes. East County (El Cajon, Santee, Alpine, Ramona, Jamul) takes more direct sun and dry heat. South-facing inland slopes are the hard case for asphalt here.
We will not invent 14-year versus 28-year service lives as if they were measured on your house. Ask the inspector what they see. Deeper material context: best roof material for coastal climates, best roofing shingles for San Diego’s climate, and how long a roof lasts here.
Manufacturer warranty coverage for granule loss
Manufacturer warranties on asphalt shingles cover manufacturing defects, not ordinary UV aging. Heavy loss in year three in a row pattern is a different conversation from even wear at year 18. The manufacturer decides the claim. We will not invent GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, or Malarkey year windows, Smart Choice windows, or how often claims succeed.
Two things still matter. You usually need documented professional installation that matches the warranty’s contractor rules. You need dated photos of when the problem showed. If loss looks early and heavy, photograph gutters, slopes, and bald spots, then have a C-39 evaluate before you argue with a manufacturer. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association publishes general guidance on defect versus wear. Read your actual warranty PDF.

How granule loss interacts with insurance claims
Insurance and granule loss do not mix cleanly. Typical homeowners policies cover sudden, accidental damage. Gradual aging is wear and tear. Confirm exclusions with your carrier. Do not treat this page as a coverage opinion.
Where it can be a claim is a covered peril: hail, a named wind event, falling debris. Adjusters in this market see a lot of aging dressed up as storm damage. You will need documentation that the loss is concentrated, recent, and tied to an event, not even wear across the slope.
If a major wind event hits and you find piles of granules you have never seen, date it, photograph it, and get a roofer’s assessment. Read the current live California Department of Insurance claims guide and your policy. This page will not restate notice windows or photo duties. Consumer line: 1-800-927-4357.
When to call a pro versus monitor
Monitor if the roof is still young, gutter granules are light, no bald spots show from the ground, and the field still looks matte from the curb. Recheck after winter storms and Santa Ana events.
Call if loss is heavy and repeats year after year, you can see bare or shiny asphalt from the street, the roof is clearly late in its printed life in a hot inland or East County setting, shingles are curling or cupping, or a storm was followed by a sudden change in the gutters.
A roof inspection is how you get remaining-life language in writing. We will not invent how long that visit takes or what it costs.
Reading remaining life without a fake scorecard
Roofers talk in factors, not a public score:
- Age relative to the product and the slope’s sun load.
- Granule loss: light and even versus heavy with bald patches.
- Pattern: even aging versus streaks, footprints, or flashing clusters.
- Climate: coastal marine layer versus East County UV.
- Surface: matte and even versus shiny, darker, mottled.
If you are late in the product’s expected life, inland or East County, with heavy loss and visible bare patches, start a replacement conversation before the first leak. A leaking roof has already failed. Granule loss is the early warning. Use it. We will not invent a two-to-five-year replacement fund schedule or a dollar gap between planned work and water in the deck.
Once heavy, consistent loss is established, get an inspection on record and a written remaining-life note. Watch for attic staining and wind damage. Replace on your timeline when the C-39 says the field is done, not after the ceiling is wet. Material choice (stay on asphalt versus a longer-life covering) is a separate conversation: signs you need a new roof in San Diego and roof replacement.
FAQ
How much granule loss is normal in a new roof’s first year?
Enough to notice after the first heavy rain: loose granules that never fully bonded at the plant. After that first season, volume should drop. If it stays heavy, treat it as a defect conversation, not “new roof dust.”
Do all asphalt shingle brands lose granules at the same rate?
No. Higher-end architectural products generally use stronger bonding and coatings than basic three-tab. Confirm the actual product on your roof. Three-tab is uncommon on quality San Diego replacements now.
Can I spray sealant to glue granules back down?
Do not. Coatings sold for asphalt shingles are at best a short cosmetic layer. Many manufacturers void remaining warranty if you coat the field. They do not restore UV protection. Save the conversation for replacement.
My neighbor’s roof is the same age and is not shedding. Why is mine?
Slope orientation, attic ventilation, product line, and tree shade all change the equation. A south slope with poor venting can look a decade older than a north slope next door.
Is granule loss covered by homeowners insurance?
Usually only if it is the result of a covered peril. Gradual loss from aging is typically excluded. Ask your carrier. This page is not a claim decision.
How do I know if loss is a manufacturing defect?
Early years, heavy volume, and patterns that match how shingles were bundled (rows, sections, one color lot) are the usual clues. Photograph everything and have a C-39 walk it before you start a manufacturer file.
Does pressure washing cause granule loss?
Yes. Do not pressure-wash asphalt shingles. The jet strips granules the way it strips paint. If the roof needs cleaning, use a low-pressure method the manufacturer allows, or ask a roofer who knows the product.
Granule loss is the most honest signal an asphalt roof gives you. It shows up slowly, it is visible from the ground, and it can give you time before the first leak. Ignore it and you pay for the covering and the water underneath.
If you are seeing granules and you are not sure which stage you are in, call (760) 750-5557 or request a quote. We match you with a licensed independent roofer. That person tells you what is left, what is normal, and whether replacement belongs on the calendar. Top Pro Roofing SD does not perform the inspection.
